Lakewood Youth Academy
The Lakewood Youth Academy’s strongest characteristic is their bond with each other. “Lakewood Academy is one of our smallest Academies, but has the biggest heart,” said Rebecca Lagos, the Academy Coordinator.
She’s gotten to know all the teenagers that attend the After-School Program, and they all look forward to seeing her every day.
Deputy Steve Ferreira, the Academy Director, has built a bond that no one can ever take away.
Every day the teenagers come in with such bright smiles — regardless of the situations they are currently facing. The youth feel a sense safety and pride when their peers and staff members are together.
Deputy Ferreira and Rebecca typically have the day pre-planned for the youth. The first hour is dedicated to tutoring and literacy. After that, the youth are free to enjoy what Steve and Rebecca have planned for them.
The Lakewood Youth Academy has a dedicated soccer and basketball team and looks forward to intramural sports events throughout the year against other Youth Academies.
The teenage participants that attend the Lakewood Youth Academy have enjoyed many field trips to different places throughout the year. From beach trips, soccer games at Stub Hub Center, and to Camp Courage in Diamond Bar — there is always an adventure waiting for them.
“Deputy Steve Ferreira is the heart of our Lakewood Academy, and our kids look up to him as a father figure,” said Rebecca. “I believe he is the reason why we’ve accomplished so much as the Lakewood Academy.”
